Third Grade is Right Around The Corner!!

Hello 3rd Grade Friends!
I am so excited to be teaching 3rd grade again this year! I am looking forward to our new adventure in 3rd grade and working with a lot of familiar faces from our days together in first grade!

A little about Me:

I grew up in Rowley, Massachusetts with 2 sisters and 1 brother. Growing up I loved to read, ride horses, and play outside as much as possible! As an adult, I still love the outdoors. I especially love to go hiking and camping with my husband Andrew, and our dog "Goose".  I also love to travel and explore new places. I have lived in Massachusetts, Georgia, Colorado and Montana before moving to Maine 3 years ago.  My favorite places to travel, are places where there is plenty to explore outside!  At the end of this month, my husband and I are looking forward to welcoming our very first child into the world! I am very excited to become a mom, but sad to be missing out on the first few weeks of third grade with you! But don't worry- we have a great substitute teacher that will take my place for the beginning of the year, along with my third grade team teacher Mrs. Bear around to help out,  I know they will help you have a great start to third grade until I return.
This year in 3rd grade we are going to be building upon our knowledge, expanding our vocabulary, math skills, and our love of reading and writing! I hope you are up for a challenging, yet very rewarding year in 3rd grade! Come prepared the first day with an open mind, and a readiness to learn!!

Enjoy your last few weeks of summer!!

                                                                          Ms. St. Peter-Blair

Stepping into the future: A coding and robotics lesson with Mr. Cianciolo!

This past Thursday, third grade welcomed Mr. Cianciolo into our classroom for the "Hour of Code". This is a worldwide movement to encourage young students to begin developing their computer programming skills, preparing them for future tech opportunities in a very prevalent market.
Find more information about the Hour of Code here:

Mr. C taught us a few of the basics of coding operations, and it turns out, this is a very skilled group of student coders! Mr. C also introduced us to Dot and Dash, two small robots that can maneuver around a space and/or through obstacles depending on the coding written by the students.

The students had a lot of fun experimenting with coding! Thank you Mr. C for exposing us to the wonderfully exciting world of coding.

October has come to an end and we are gearing up for a busy November! A quick look back at the month brings us from developing our reading life in new reading groups, to character dress up day, to publishing and sharing our personal narratives. We successfully published our personal narratives and even managed to squeeze in a haunted themed writing project just in time for Halloween!

We presented our published narrative work to visitors from Mr. Marines 5th grade class and with our fellow 3rd grade friends in Mrs. Bear's Class! Our young authors were very impressive in their ability to share their writing with their peers. The students truly seemed to enjoy the opportunity to share their accomplishments!

This month we also began a new and exciting partnership:  This year we will have a very special new role as "Book Buddies" for our first grade friends! This is a great way for our students to act as mentors and role models to their younger friends. The partnership helps to strengthen the community feel of Alfred, but also allows both 3rd grade and 1st grade the enriching experience of sharing their knowledge and learning from each other.
Take a look at a few of our photos of our wonderful third grade leaders, helping their first grade friends read and understand new reading strategies. This past Friday marked our second meeting of book buddies.  I am excited to watch as our third grade students step into the role of teacher and mentor to our young first grade friends!
